The night of the 15th of July and the morning that followed saw a truly heavy snowfall across the Western Cape. Not willing to miss the rare opportunity to play in snow, myself, Oliver and couple of his friends made the tiring journey up to Victoria Peak.

Parking at the Witbrug, it was snowing lightly on us – clearly we were in for a lot of snowfall at the top. We made quick work of the route up past Bergriviernek and onto the Dwarsberg plateau. On the peak, Martin unveiled a bottle of brandy – undoubtedly more warming than all our gear. We mixed this with scorching Rooibos tea I’d brought in a flask  – without a doubt, a cocktail meant only for the gods.

On the way down from the peak, we dismally attempted to build a snowman and tried our luck at sliding down the steep slopes. To my surprise, we also came across Dalene with a group of her friends. This warranted an impromptu snowball fight, which I claim we won. All in all, probably one of my favourite days in the mountain.
