Miaspoort Trail

Interning over the June-July holidays meant I had endless free time over the weekends. Estelle and I thus decided to head up to the Italian Prisoner of War cross on the top of Hugenoot peak.

We parked on the Du Toitskloof pass and made the steep ascent. Bright yellow tolbosse and Wabome (Protea nitida) lined the path up to the neck. From the neck we had a stunning view of the Du Toits mountains, the N1 and the Hawekwas mountains.

Heading back from the cross, we decided to try find the POW shelter. Using what I could remember from the previous night’s research, we headed in the general direction of the shelterer. Much to my disappointment, we could not find anything.

We soon rejoined the path and headed back down. Here we met a young couple from Paarl, taking their two dogs up to the saddle – they were able to inform us on where we had gone wrong in our search!

Peter, we did this hike on Xmas Eve and loved it. We have a favour to ask of you. Franschhoek is trying to improve information about the trails in the Conservation Area behind the Berg River dam. I found your web site and think it is excellent and very useful as a way of providing helpful info about hikes you have done. We would like to set something similar up for the Conservation area? Are you happy to help us set up something similar for the Franschhoek Tourism Office? Hope you had a happy Christmas and are enjoying the holidays. Jacqui
