Joe and I decided to take a break from the exam studies, and head up Stellenbosch Mountain. To my own embarrassment, I must admit that in all my time in Stellenbosch, I have never been up this iconic mountain before!

We followed the path up from Coetzenburg Stadium, which was easy going. Nearing the top of the mountain, the sun came up over Botmaskop and illuminated the Twin Peaks (Die Pieke).

The rocky plateau at the top provided a wind-sheltered spot for us to enjoy our lunch; from here we headed down the path on the south-western part of the mountain.

On the decent, two trail runners came blazing past – they stopped and informed us that they had come from Haelkop. They had apparently set out at 5:00 in the morning. I had trouble comprehending how the two had managed to scramble up the mountains for two hours in the dark! Nevertheless, Joe and I soon made our way down, following the contour paths to the main road.
